Where has the Cubs offense went?

Submitted by Cliff on Monday, 1 September 2008 2 Comments

Another game and another poor showing by the Cubs offense. This time it was against the Houston Astros as the Cubs were shut out 3-0. Roy Oswalt shut down the Cubs as he pitched 8 2/3 innings and held them to only four hits in the game.

The Cubs only had two hits heading into the ninth inning when they had a mini rally going. After Ryan Theriot grounded out to start the inning, Daryle Ward and Alfonso Soriano both singled to bring the tying run to the plate. However Kosuke Fukudome grounded into a fielders choice and Derrek Lee flied out to deep right field to end the game.

The offense needs to turn things around on Tuesday and score some runs. The pitching wasn’t bad at all on Monday as Jason Marquis threw six innings and gave up five hits and two runs. The third Astros run was charged to reliever Jeff Samardzija.

The only good news to come out of the day was that the Milwaukee Brewers also lost so the Cubs are still up 4.5 games in the division.

Let’s get em tomorrow.

  • Greetings!

My apologies in advance for leaving this in the comments field, however, I couldn’t locate your site email. Anyway, we published Crazy ’08 by Cait Murphy, a critically acclaimed book, which is the eminent account of the Cubs 08 season. If you’re interested in a copy for potential review, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

After watching the game tonight, the spirit of 1969 is slowly returning from the ashes.

The Cubs were in 1st in the first week of September 1969 and suddenly, the Cubs blew it.

The Cubs cannot use the excuse that they are tired. Every team plays the same amount of regular season games.

The Yankees would not have won 26 Championships by complaining that they were tired. The St. Louis Cardinals won 10 titles by overcoming tiredness. Quoting Vince Lombardi, “Fatigue is for cowards.”

The Cubs have an Obsession against small ball. The 2004 Cubs had 5 players that hit 25 or more Home Runs. The 2004 Cubs watched the playoffs as spectators.

The Cubs need to play more small ball and execute when runners are in scoring position. If not the cubs can watch the world series just like the Cubs Players did in 1969.
