All blogger about Jake Peavy going to the Chicago Cubs appear to be wasted thoughts as Padres GM Kevin Towers told reporters this morning that “It doesn’t look like anything is going to happen with the Cubs.”
Cubs general manager Jim Hendry backed out and decided to walk away after telling Towers that he had other things going on. Why in the heck is a left handed outfielder more important then Peavy I have to wonder? Was Hendry just playing his cards close hoping that Towers would give in?
I really wonder how close this deal was to happening and if it would have got done had Towers gave Hendry more time.
The Chicago Cubs and San Diego Padres are still talking about a trade that would send Jake Peavy to the Cubs. It seems that both Jim Hendry and Kevin Towers are holding to their cards and trying to see which one folds first. I have a feeling that Hendry knows that Towers needs to trade Peavy and he is holding strong on what he is willing to give up.
Mark DeRosa’s name has been a hot name the last couple of days in Las Vegas as well. Right now it appears for a three way trade to work, DeRosa would be being sent to another team, with that team sending patch players that the Padres would be interested in. If DeRosa is traded, expect the Cubs to keep Sean Marshall and not send him to the Padres.
In other news this morning, Donald Veal, the second round draft pick in the 2005 draft was picked up by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the Rule 5 draft. The Pirates must keep Veal on the 25 man roster the entire year or offer him back to the Cubs. It’s a good situation for Veal as he didn’t look like he would get much of an opportunity with the Cubs this next season.
Good morning Cubs fans. If you are like me, you have been paying close attention to the Winter meetings out in Las Vegas. Wow, what a time it would be to be at the Bellagio just sitting around people watching and hearing about all the rumors etc that are going around. That would be a bloggers paradise!
As far as the Cubs go. They met with free agent Milton Bradley in a hotel room on Sunday. Bradley could be that right fielder that the team is looking at, and he also hits left handed so he would would fit into the teams plan. I just have to wonder if the team needs another head case on the team similar to Carlos Zambrano? Bradley batted .321 with 22 home runs and 77 RBI in 126 games with the Rangers in 2008
We have heard that Cubs and Padres are very close on a deal for Jake Peavy. A few things need to happen before the deal goes down and that would be moving Jason Marquis and trading Felix Pie to the Orioles. The Orioles like Pie and would send the Cubs Garret Olson in return. The Cubs would then ship Olson onto the Padres and then the deal for Peavy would happen. The current names that could be headed to the Padres in the trade would be Josh Vitters, Sean Marshall, Kevin Hart, Ronny Cedeno, and a couple of minor league pitchers. One key name that is really being thrown around is Mark DeRosa. It is unclear is DeRosa would be part of a trade for Peavy but we will keep you all updated if we hear anything different.
It’s going to be an exciting couple of days for Cubs fans I think. Keep on checking back!
Ron Santo once again was denied entry to the baseball Hall of Fame on Monday. Santo received only 39 votes from the Veterans Committee compared to 57 votes that he received last year. Did Ron say something about some past players that are on the committee in the last year that we don’t know about? I’m surprised that he received 19 less votes this time around.
The Veterans Committee examining the careers of those who began playing after 1943 did not elect anyone into the Hall, though a pre-1943 Veterans Committee elected former Yankees and Indians second baseman Joe Gordon.
The other members of the post-1943 Veterans Committee final ballot were Dick Allen, Gil Hodges, Jim Kaat, Tony Oliva, Al Oliver, Vada Pinson, Luis Tiant, Joe Torre and Maury Wills.
