Just how serious are these Jake Peavy rumors?

Submitted by Cliff on Wednesday, 5 November 2008 One Comment

The first round of Cubs rumors have been going around this week and the biggest name that has been mentioned is Jake Peavy. Peavy has been on the trading block since the season ended and the Padres would like to move him quickly reports are saying.

Peavy has a limited no trade clause in his contract but there teams that he would accept trades to are the Chicago Cubs, Atlanta Braves, and the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Braves have already told the Padres that they would not deal their number one prospect for Peavy so that could take them out of the running unless the Padres lower their demands.

On Tuesday, it was reported that the Cubs and Padres were talking about a deal for Peavy. This was after Ryan Demspter told the Cubs that he would play the free agent market before negotiating a new contract with the Cubs. Jim Hendry does not want to lose out on Peavy as well as Dempster so we might see some action here soon to make sure he locks up one of them.

If the Cubs were really serious about landing Peavy they would have to start with a Sean Marshall, Ronny Cedeno, Felix Pie package and possibly include two other minor league players. I’d do that if it were able to be pulled off. I’d also try to push Jason Marquis onto the Padres to free up some money.

If the Cubs are unable to land Peavy, look for them to turn their attention to C.C. Sabathia or A.J. Burnett. Chris De Luca of the Chicago Sun-Times just reported Wednesday morning that the Cubs would rather have Sabathia then Peavy but it depends on how much money they can free up.

It’s going to be a very interesting off season in Chicago that is for sure. What other rumors are you hearing about or what deals would you like to see be done?

  • Cliff says:

William: Marshall would be that pitcher he would like to get. Marquis would be another but I haven’t actually heard his name mentioned to often in the trade rumors.

If they choose to do a deal with the Braves, it will be involved around Escobar and not two front line pitchers.
