Gregg gives up another home run as Cubs lose 4-3

Submitted by Cliff on Wednesday, 12 August 2009 One Comment

It was another bad outing for Kevin Gregg and the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday night as they opened up a three game set with the Philadelphia Phillies. Gregg was in his second inning of action when Ben Francisco took him yard for a lead off home run in the 12th inning. The Phillies would end up winning the game by the score of 4-3 and Gregg would be left wondering why he is giving up so many home runs.

“I want to keep the ball in the ballpark,” Gregg said. “Obviously, it’s not happening for me. I’ve got to keep plugging away at it and figure out a way to stop it.” Gregg said after the game.

It really sucks to lose a game like this especially when it is against the Phillies. These are the type of games that Cubs need to win if they want to compete in the playoffs. If Carlos Marmol and Gregg continue to walk batters and give home runs, the Cardinals are going to run away with this division in my opinion.

The poor outing by Marmol and Gregg makes everyone forget about the good outing that starting pitcher Rich Harden had. Harden had a perfect game going until the sixth inning and he only made one mistake in the game. The first hit for the Phillies would be a two run home run off the bat of Jimmy Rollins. Other than that one mistake, Harden struck out six while only giving up two hits and the two runs.

Wednesday night it will be Jeff Samardzija getting the start against the Phillies Pedro Martinez. It will be interesting to watch this matchup. Will “The Shark” get out of the first three or four innings? Will Pedro shut down the Cubs in his return?

ok, where do i start. i have been a cub fan since my grandmother use to sit me in front of the t.v. watching wgn with harry carey announcing. since those early days i learned what being a cub fan was all about. the hoping for next year, the heartbreaking losses…etc, etc, etc…..we as fans have been teased over the years. 1984, 89, 98, 03, 07,08….ok, after watching all this futility, especially in the playoffs of the last 2 years i have come to a conclusion for myself. I AM FRUSTRATED….with a big, huge capitol F!!!!!!!!! i keep waiting for everything to turn around. this was again suppose to be the year. you get a sense, however early in the year what things might be. early on i never did get a good feeling. however, i have tried to stay positive. now here we are in mid august and the cubs have decided to take a big huge crap and go from percentage points in 1st place to 6 games back…in like 10 days. what the heck. i know…i need to stay positive…soriano will start hitting. it’s just a matter of time..bradley will come around..soto will get out of his funk..the pitching staff will get healthy..blah, blah, blah. it may sound sarcastic, but from this one huge cub fan to another i can only simply say…am i the only one that was watching mlb.com monday night around midnight when the padres were hosting the cubs. cubs up 1-0 after some great pitching by the cubs…up to the 9th inning that is. 2 outs..the count 3-2 with 1 guy on 1st..i mean was i the only one that thought uh, oh…is it…could it happen again…then bam, another home run into the night….another walk off homer by the oposition…another heart break…am i the only die hard cub fan that wants to say enough is enough. i am not saying the players, the management, the ownership and so on doesn’t want to win, but i am saying that all together they need to come up with a way to win..not tomorrow, not next year…but right now. i think it is horrible that a team that should be there, seems to be the only playoff contender that everyone would like to play…heck i don’t blame them. if by some miracle we make the playoffs will it be 1 more sweep to end the season. look, to me someone has to step up and be a leader…i absolutely feel sorry for lou. he has one of the highest payrolls in the game. he can field a lineup that on paper looks like we should be killing the ball. but we’re at the bottom of almost every offensive category. as i write this i just watched an inside the park home run hit against us…it’s almost laughable. this is probably to most a very drab commentary, but this cub fan has come to the end of his rope. i will however leave with this…randy wells has pitched pretty good..and derek lee seems to be coming around after about 1 and 1/2 years of wondering if we would ever see the same derek lee. i guess maybe i should just say i’ll keep sticking with them…why leave now. i have bled blue my entire life and will continue till the day i die. but, man would it be nice…just once…wouldn’t it?
