Dempster and the Cubs lose to the Astros in 11 innings

Submitted by Cliff on Tuesday, 11 September 2007 6 Comments

Another terrible performance by Ryan Dempster tonight as he walked a batter and then had a game winning double hit off him in the bottom of the 11th inning.  But should the game even have went that long?  No it shouldn’t have, the Cubs have got to start getting a key basehit when you have a runner in scoring position late in the ball game.  Stop grounding into damn double plays or hitting soft groundballs and hit a damn line drive somewhere.

Jason Marquis only lasted five innings as he gave up three earned runs.  Everyone was hoping for a better perfomance out of Marquis but it wasn’t meant to be.  Carlos Marmol and Bob Howry came in and pitched four scourless innings before Dempster came on board in the 10th inning and into the 11th where he allowed the game winning run to come across.

The one big hit the Cubs did have tonight was off Mark DeRosa’s bat when he connected for a three run homer in the third inning.  Jason Kendall also had a RBI in the 2nd inning as Jacque Jones cross the plate.  You have got to have more production then that however.  If you have a runner on second and 1 out, you have got to get that run in.  If you have the bases loaded and 1 out, you have got to a run in.  Right now the Cubs are just not executing at all.  They aren’t playing smart baseball like they were a month ago.  They better get going as they are now a game behind the Brewers in the division.

I have been tired of Dempster along time now. Everytime he comes in I turn the game off cause I know he will give the game up. Why people keep saying he is good is beyond me. I know people like Len Casper and Bob Brenly are saying this stuff to defend him probably cause he is a personal friend and maybe he’s a great guy. But he’s not a good pitcher, let’s be real now. They talk about the 13 game save streak he had, but how many games did he give up hits and runs during that streak is the bigger stat. Just cause he has a 3 run cushion and gives up only 2 doesn’t mean he pitched will. Without Dempster we WOULD have a record far better than the Brewers. How many saves has he lost? How many has he blow? Carlos Marmol—third in ERA in the NL should easily be the closer, who is supposed to be able to shut down a team like he can.

  • THIS GAME WAS HUGE. THE CUBS HAD NUMEROUS OPPORTUNITIES TO WIN THE GAME.
THE HOUR GLASS IS GETTING EMPTY. the “will not” get into the playoffs simply b y winning 1 game, then losing he next. it’s show time. remember, they spent $300 million dollars…..for a letdown?
wake up cubs. by the wayu, when you have a man on 3rd base with less thn 2 outs, you “should” be able to score, right???

    keep praying.

Dempster is not getting it done, it is too late in the season for excuse like ” Its my Fault “. The Cubs should have never went into extra innings either that wild pitch didn’t help. Come on CUBS wake up already and man up! We all know what excuses are like. We can no longer afford to loose lets put a streak together….GO CUBS

Well, Dempster blew another one. When is Lou and his staff going to realize that Dempster just can not hack it as a closer. If Lou is depending on him to take the Cubbies’ to the Division Championship, he, Lou, just might as well throw in the towel now. He, Dempster, may be a great guy to his team mates but a closer he is not. Len and Bob may attempt to defend his action by their favorable comments. But lets face it, when Dempster comes in on a close game, you might as well turn out the lights, because the party will soon be over. Marmol and Howery are far better control pitchers than Dumpster, OPPS ! I mean Dempster.

Dempster comes in and pitches. Lou paces and prays. Lou’s hair gets grayer with each hope and pitch by Dempster.

  • John E. West Frankfort, IL. says:

Keep up the good judgement Lou. Continue to have resevations as to bringing in Dempster as a closer. You have Hart, Howry, Woods and Marmol. As all of the die hard fans know to well, it is in the home strech of the season and one game can make a different as to the winning or losing of the Division Championship. You have came to far now to have Dempster pitch and hope the championship away.
