Santa Ana, CA...Is the son of former big leaguer Gary Ward, who
played for Minnesota, Texas, New York (AL) and Detroit.
2006 Highlights:
Acquired from the Nationals on Aug. 31. Had a two-run single in
his first at-bat as a Brave on Sept. 2. His 22 pinch-hits and
four pinch-hit homers led the Majors. Hit a three-run homer against
the Nationals on Sept. 18. While with the Nationals, he hit .308
with six homers and 19 RBIs.
2005 Highlights:
Spent full season with Pittsburgh...Established career highs in
runs scored...Made 109 appearances (101 starts) at firstbase and
committed six errors (five fielding/one throwing)...Hit .288 (49-for-170)
with 11 home runs in his first 50 games thru 6/7, but just .241
(57-for-237) with one homer in his last 83 contests...Was the
Opening Day starter at first base and went 0-for-3 vs. Milwaukee
on 4/4...Went hitless in first 14 at bats before taking Gary Glover
deep on 4/12 @Milwaukee...Collected fifth career triple on 4/20
@Cincinnati...Batted .357 (5-for-14) with two doubles, two home
runs and five RBI during four-game hitting streak from 4/25 thru
5/1...Had fifth career two-homer game on 5/1 vs. San Francisco...Had
20 putouts in 5/9 contest @San Francisco, falling two shy of the
major league record for putouts in a game by a first baseman...Tied
for sixth in the National League with eight home runs during the
month of May...Reached base safely in 14 straight games from 5/18
thru 6/3...Had 11 RBI over four-game stretch from 6/7-11...Hit
safely in 10 straight games from 6/14-23 (had one multi-hit contest
during the streak)...Made 33 consecutive starts at first base
from 6/3 thru 7/8...Snapped an 0-for-30 streak with a 2-for-2
performance on 7/21 vs. Colorado - also had gone 14 straight games
without an RBI before collecting one on 7/21...His home run off
Arizona's Brandon Webb which bounced into the Allegheny River
on 9/7 was his first since 6/7 and snapped a 208 atbat drought
without a long ball - it was also his first extra base hit since
7/31...Went 3-for-3 on 9/16 vs. Cincinnati (game two), but hit
just .162 (6-for-37) in his last 18 games...Went 4-for-22 (.182)
as a pinch hitter, going hitless in his last seven at bats off
the bench.
