Cubs sign So Taguchi and avoid arbitration with Ronny Cedeno

Submitted by on Friday, 16 January 2009 No Comment

Good afternoon everyone. General manager Jim Hendry made a couple of moves on Thursday as he signed outfielder So Taguchi to a minor league contract with an invitiation to spring training. Hendry also avoided salary arbitration by signing infielder Ronny Cedeno to a new one year contract.

Taguchi will make $900,000 if he makes the team out of spring training but I don’t see that happening. The Cubs are already stocked with outfielders in my opinion. Some people out there believe this is just a move to make Kosuke Fukudome feel a little more comfortable during spring training.

Cedeno resigns with the team as a backup infielder / utility player. He could still possibly be traded before the season starts however. He is out of options and cannot be sent back down to the minor leagues without clearing waivers. Cedeno will be making $822,000 in 2009. Not bad for sitting on th bench most of the season!

Look for Jim Hendry to sign the other two arbitration-eligible players before Tuesdays deadline. Pitchers Kevin Gregg and Michael Wuertz will both probably get a little bit of a raise compared to their paychecks last season.

I’m looking forward to launching our new re-design of the blog this weekend. My design partner plans to push it out early Saturday or Sunday so keep checking back for our new look!
