Cubs sign Jim Hendry to four year extension

Submitted by Cliff on Monday, 20 October 2008 4 Comments

What was blogged about last week has come true. Jim Hendry and the Chicago Cubs have agreed on a four year contract extension that will keep him with the Cubs through the 2012 season. In the six years that Hendry has been the Cubs GM, the Cubs have had a winning record in three of those six seasons and made the playoffs in three of those seasons.

This move was pretty much expected after other teams asked permission to speak with Hendry. One of those teams was the Seattle Mariners who wanted to talk to Hendry about becoming the general manager of the Mariners. The Cubs didn’t allow that talk to happen however.

Good move for the Cubs. Now it will be interesting to see what happens in the next couple of months with the Winter meetings coming up. The sale of the team doesn’t look like it will be done before the end of the year so I’m not sure how much there will be to go after free agents.

I have generally liked hendry, but the 4 year deal should allow him to see the following blows:

    1) needing to deal fukendome from the minors at $11 mil a year!
    2) watching Z and harden EACH have shoulder surgery
    3) hopefully watching Z have brain surgery
    4) watching reed johnson be an all star on a different team since we can’t pull the trigger to start him over two grossly overpaid outfielders he is better than
    5) needing to swallow his pride and deal “cancer” (soriano) in a sammy sosa like trade where we have to pay him when he plays for someone else
    6) watch a bidding war with the Yankees for Ryan Dempster to make sure we have to pay him more.

I’m sure there are many others.

too bad the cubs couldn’t strap a set on like the rays, who they should be playing now.

    sincerely, the cubs in 2108.

    I forgot 4 other points:

    1) hopefully find a class AA team to take Daryl (5 for 55) ward in exchange for a case of beer
    2) hopefully find a class A team to take Bobby “one pitch” howry PLUS a case of beer. Hold the cleveland indians roids that made him good.
    3) Like OJ – search for the only American other than Jim and Lou who think daryl and Bob belong in the pros.
    4) talk Micah Hoffpauier off the ledge for not being on our postseason roster, while daryl and bob made it.

  • Rob Schnelle says:

I must say I agree with Mr. McKay on several points. How on earth did Hoffpauier not play in post-season , while at end of regular season he shined.

    2) daryl ward how is this guy in the major leagues and after a horrendous regualr season as pinch hitter , why on earth take him to post-season.

    3) The only thing howry was able to do for the Cubs was to blow 5 leads of 5 runs or more in 1 inning each. My nephews 13 yo baseball team coulda crushed him.
here is to a successful surgerical season to Z and hardins shoulder and a speedy return.

Please tell Mr, hendry to resign Dempster He was a bright spot this year

    sincerely Rob Schnelle

Very good points by both John and Rob. It will be interesting to see what happens this off season.

I’m pretty sure we will see some sort of trade that we never thought would happen to bring in a big left handed bat.

Does that mean moving Soriano and eating his contract? Could it mean moving Derrek Lee who’s numbers were down in 08?
