Cubs shutout in the rubber game against Arizona

Submitted by Cliff on Wednesday, 29 April 2009 3 Comments

After having a great game on Tuesday night, the Cubs game back on Wednesday afternoon for the rubber game of a three game series against the Diamondbacks and they should probably just stayed in the hotel or got on the plane early to head back to Chicago. The Cubs offense was terrible, the pitching was terrible and it was just a down right ugly game to watch as the Diamondbacks hammered the Cubs 10-0.

As a team, the Cubs only had two hits on the day. Ryan Theriot and Aaron Miles each had one hit but that was all the team would get at the plate. It was just disgusting watch them swing the bat against Doug Davis. Who would have thought that Davis would shut down the Cubs? Hmm I sure didn’t…

On the pitchers mound, Ryan Dempster took the loss as he gave up five runs on six hits in six innings of action. Three walks and a home run by Chad Tracy really hurt Dempster on the mound. He just hasn’t been throwing the ball that well. Atleast nothing like last year. Throwing 30 pitches in the first inning you knew it was going to be a long day for Dempster.

Once Dempster left the game, things didn’t change however as reliever Carlos Marmol was charged with four runs while only recording one out. He left the game and gave way to Jeff Samardzija who gave up a bases loaded double to Justin Upton. All three of those runs were charged to Marmol. Something is still wrong with Marmol’s knee in my opinion and I would not be one bit surprised if he goes on the disabled list along with Aramis Ramirez once the team gets back to Chicago.

And guess what else? Kevin Gregg gave up another run!

This team is playing ugly baseball right now all the way around. Will a change of scenery and a homestand against the Marlins and Giants change things? We will have to wait and see…

This team as presently constituted does not appear to be a contender for the postseason. When the Cubs announced that Aramis would be out 2-3 days I said at least a week probably longer. We have proven that Fontenot cannot play 3B and we have no one on the squad OR in Iowa OR in Tennessee who can. Whose fault is that?

Instead we carry Joey Gathright who cannot play baseball, any position. He must go.

D.Lee looked awkward at 1B today. How can a cleanup hitter get credit for a single on a line drive bunt that carries past the bag? Lee was slow and did not move well after that ball. He is not hitting and he has no range at first.

The jury is still out on Milton Bradley but he shows none of the fire and drive he had in Arizona. Whose fault is that? Does he blame the sportswriters for that?

Yes, it is early. No, it is not time to give up. But yes, something needs to change to get this ship righted. Someone must light a fire under the players who are in the lineup. And someone must get the guys healthy and prepared. Soon.

I like to dance naked while looking at pictures of Carlos Marmol and Kevin “Old” Gregg. Raaaaaawr!

I agree, the Cubs do not have a backup third basemen even in the minor leagues at this point. Aramis needs to go to the disabled list. Josh Vitters is still a ways away, but would the team take a chance at calling him up to see what he could do? Fontenot is not the answer as a backup third basemen that is for sure.

Soto’s shoulder is also hurting that is for sure. We need to give Hill more at bats especially the way he hit the other night.
