Ealier today, the Chicago Cubs resigned veteran Wade Miller.  Miller made a comback the last month of the season after being out with a right shoulder arthroscopy.

He made five starts with Chicago from September 9-October 1, going 0-2 with a 4.57 ERA (11 ER/21.2 IP) with 18 walks and 20 strikeouts. He allowed two or fewer earned runs in three of the five starts.

I think this is just an insurance pitcher for Jim Hendry, at best Miller is a #5 starter for the Cubs.  He just does not have the stuff he used to before his injury.

Daisuke Matsuzaka is a bigtime pitcher in Japan and he is looking to come to the US just like Ichiro Suzuki did in 2000.  The Cubs, Yankees, Mets, Red Sox, and Rangers are said to have entered bids for the 26 year old pitcher.

What ever team Daisuke Matsuzaka decides to goto, they will be spending near 13-15 millon per year and I would assume atleast a 3 year contract.  Would we rather go for Matsuzaka or Zito?  It’s tuff to say since we haven’t seen Matsuzaka as much as Zito.  We will know before Tuesday what team he will be going too.

I have been reading on various Cubs Blogs and message boards that Aramis Ramirez and the Chicago Cubs will sign a new contract by Saturday.  I expect the contract to be around 13 million a year and for 3-4 years.

It will be key to get this took care before the meetings happen in Arizona so the Cubs coaching staff and scouts can work on possible free agents and trades without worrying about Ramirez.

The Chicago Tribune is reporting that Jim Hendry and the Cubs are possibly looking into a trade involving Mets starting pitcher Aaron Heilman.  I’m not too sure that I like this move, he would be a cheaper 5th guy in the rotation but can he get the job done?  The only thing that he has going for him against some of the younger pitchers the Cubs have is experience.

I think I would rather throw out a Sean Marshall or Angel Guzman for the 5th starter to start the season but we will have to wait and see what Jim Hendry does.

In a suprise move or atleast I think suprising, Aramis Ramirez filed for free agency on Monday allowing other teams to give him offers and jack up the price to sign him if the Cubs don’t reach an agreement with him before Nov 11th.  I figure if he opted out now, he is going to wait and play the free agency game and not sign back with the Cubs before the 11th.  Expect the Cubs to spend another 5-7 million on a contract to keep him in Chicago now.

Bad news for Hendry and the Cubs, if Ramirez does sign with another team like the Dodgers or Angels who really want him, the Cubs have no third basemen that jump right into the poistion.  Scott Moore is not ready to be an everyday player in the Major Leagues.  The Cubs would definately have to trade for a player or sign an average third basement via free agency.
